What Is a Prayer Vigil?
A prayer vigil is a dedicated time of intentional, sustained prayer — a season where we set aside the busyness of life and gather together to seek God with focused hearts. The word vigil comes from the Latin vigilia, meaning “a watch” or “wakefulness” — historically, it referred to staying awake through the night to keep watch, as soldiers or sentinels would do.
In the Christian tradition, prayer vigils have been practiced since the early church. Believers would gather in the late hours to pray, worship, and wait on the Lord — often before major feasts, important decisions, or times of urgent need.
Why Would We Do This?
There are several powerful reasons to come together for a Friday evening vigil from 8 PM to midnight:
∙ To prioritize prayer. It’s easy for prayer to become something we fit around our schedule. A vigil says that for these hours, prayer is the schedule.
∙ To pray together. Jesus promised that where two or three gather in His name, He is present (Matthew 18:20). There is something uniquely powerful about the body of Christ uniting in prayer.
∙ To watch and wait. Jesus asked His disciples in Gethsemane, “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). A vigil is our answer: Yes, Lord — we will watch with You.
∙ To create space for God to move. In the quiet of the evening, away from screens and noise, we open ourselves to hear God’s voice more clearly and invite His presence more fully.
∙ To stand in the gap. The church has always been called to intercede — for our families, our community, our nation, and the world. A vigil is a declaration that we take that calling seriously.
What Will It Look Like?
Our vigil will run from 8:00 PM to midnight on Friday evening. You are welcome to stay for the full four hours or for whatever portion you are able. The time will include worship, guided prayer, moments of silence, and intercession. Come expecting to encounter God.
